In easy terms, it is a device which sends an electric shock into the heart of the patient suffering from any heart related disorder which subsequently results in the return of the normal rhythm of the heart.


To know about this process in completion, one has to know about it in ways that are slightly more complex. When you notice that the patient is in distress which is understood when the patient is seemingly non responsive and pulseless, help should immediately be summoned. Soon after the help arrives, CPR begins. This process of CPR should be continued until the ones who can provide proper cared arrives at the scene.

Once they do arrive, the process of defibrillation begins. At first electrocardiogram leads are used. They are attached to the patient's chest. The pads are coated with paste or gel and then placed on the patient's chest. While visualising the electrocardiogram, the caregivers ensure the lack of pulse. Then they assure discontinued contact with him or her and finally deliver the electric charge into his or her chest.

In case of disorders such as atrial fibrillation or flutter, there is the option of atrial defibrillation. The procedure is one where the electrocardiogram is monitored consistently and the paddles placed upon the chest of the patient is placed with conducting gel to maintain great contact between skin and paddles. During the thoracic surgery, if the heart can be visualised, the paddles should be directly to it.
